RE: Camping with Newborn

Awesome information as we are planning our first camping trip with our twin boys this coming June. They will be about six month's old come that time so I am hoping that they will do fine. I am just wondering what we are really going to be able to do with them once we get there since they can't walk around or ride a bike. The only thing so far that I know of is getting one of those backpack things and take them hiking.

RE: Portable satellite question

You can also have some of the satellite units hooked up to your phone line as it will display caller ID on the TV monitor. Ours does that and it is very nice to have that feature so you don't have to go and look at the phone. We have Dish Network and I believe that other than ordering movies, the phone line only provides you this caller ID feature. Check your user manuals, your unit might do the same with your phone line plugged in.

RE: Generator use ettiquete

I think the OPs best bet is to buy another Honda and parallel them. I would prefer one generator that runs at 67 decibels than having to have two that run at 59 each which would basically double the sound when both are needed for power. This is a common misconception. It does NOT double the sound. I can't prove it mathematically (it's complicated) but I own 2, and two are just barely louder than one. Matter of fact, the sound can actually go down at higher loads since the two gennies run as less volume than one would. Interesting but when you say that having two would just increase the noise level slightly, would that mean that it would increase it enough to just bring it up to the same level as the Champion?? If so then I would opt for just having the one unit than the two.

RE: Portable satellite question

Yep. If you already have satellite service at home, just get a dsih that will work with your receiver and take it with you when you travel. I have 2 receivers that I purchased several years ago. When I bought them I was given 2 dishes with them as part of the package. I own all of my equipment which was purchased from Circuit City. One dish has a dual LNB. I bolted it to the end of the house to connect both receivers at home. The other dish has a single LNB which only allows use of one receiver. I take it and the reveiver I use in my bedroom with me when I travel. Directv has that receiver listed as my primary receiver on my account. Several years ago I contacted Directv and asked about taking the receiver with me to use with my trailer and was told it was okay as long as it was the primary receiver listed on the account. They told me the second receiver must be left at home and connected to a phone line. Good point about leaving the second one at home being connected. The only bad thing is our main one is a huge DVR unit that would be a pain to disconnect. Then we have a second one that is just the basic receiver in a child's bedroom that would have been nice to use instead.

RE: Stick Figure Family Stickers

It's interesting to me that the police are saying you shouldn't put those stickers in your windows when the Fire Dept gives out stickers to put in your child's window so the fireman would know that a child is in that room in the event there was a fire. It wasn't but a year ago that my child was given one of those stickers when he had a visit to a fire department. Isn't that the same thing? Very true and what about how you even note in your signature block as do others what children you have along with their ages...:h

RE: Stick Figure Family Stickers

Do they also sell a stick figure sticker that you can put up there for an ex that you have who won't go away because of child support?

RE: Portable satellite question

There is indeed a way and it is a very easy way too... I'm going to make an assumption.. Somewhere in your rig, likely near the front TV is an outlet plate, this plate has a 12 volt outlet, an Antenna connector, a Switch (Button) and a LED, it's the power supply for your roof top antenna pre-amp It may say WINEGARD upon it. The TV-ANT line to your sat receiver or television is hooked to this plate Open the box and you will find 3 or 4 cables attached to the back... ONE of these is the PARK CABLE TV input cable. Disconnnect it and confirm that you have disconnected the proper cable. now take the cable that currently runs from the sat receiver to the TV and hook it up where you just unhooked the PARK INPUT, Remove the TV-ANT-IN cable from the front of the plate to the sat receiver and plug it into the TV. Using an extension cable hook the PARK cable to the TV-ANT-IN jack on the back of the sat receiver.. here is your truth table for switches after this mod TV switch plate ON, (Sat receiver don't matter) Over the air rooftop antenna TV SWITCH PLATE OF, Sat Receiver on: Sat television BOTH Switch plate and Sat receiver off: Park cable TV This is not the method Winegard suggests. Winegard's suggesting does not give you the third option. Mine does for no extra effort. I myself have been wondering this same thing about beign able to use satellite on my TT as I only have the one outlet up in the front of the trailer with the connections you described above in the quote. So is this what I would have to do in order to use my satellite off that one cable outlet in the dining area of the trailer?? Just to see if I am on the same page all you need once the trailer is ready to accept the sat. is the dish, a receiver from your home, and some cable?? Do you need to call and add any sort of service or just hook it all up at the campsite and away you go??

RE: Running Lights

Thanks for the help Jeff!! I assume then that the lights end up running off your TT battery? does this pull a lot of power from the battery or is it so slim that it shouldn't even cross my mind when they are on? :)

RE: Anyone familiar with Dish satellite on the road for a tt??

So I have a question on how do you determine what way to face the satellite when you get to your destination. I know the one we have at home on the roof has to be positioned a certain direction.

RE: Running Lights

Can someone put it out on the table a "how to" for doing this through the use of the plug that normally goes into the TV?? I only ask because I think that it would be a good way to check your bulbs from time to time. Thanks TWhaylen, If your TV is wired the same as mine (and it should be), as you are looking into the plug that is attached to your camper, hold it so that the locking tab (that the rcvr lid locks onto) is at 12 noon. If you insert a wire into the the hole directly at the top center... and then the other end of that wire into the hole that is next to that hole in a clockwise manner... BINGO... your lights should light up. Hope this helps. Jeff Thank you for the help. Can you use any gauge of wire or does it have to be a specific type of wire? I assume when you are talking about that "locking tab" you are pointing towards that little area of the plug that is molded out so that it isn't a perfect circle?? Do you just pull the wire back out to turn it off? Thanks

RE: Draining Fresh Water Tank

Since we live in earthquake prone Los Angeles, we always refill the water when we get back. We will usually add some clorine in the hose before we attach it to the coach. Having lived thru the Sylmar in 71 and Northridge in 94, its comforting to know we ready for the next one. When you all say that you add the clorox to the hose before filling the tank, does that mean that you dump a little down your fresh water hose and then hook it to your water source and proceed to fill?

RE: Newbie with fresh water Q's

I saw someone telling you to use your garden hose to fill your tank. I would suggest against that, not because of dangerous bacteria and the like, but more so because of the bad taste that could come with a garden hose. Water hoses for RV's (the white ones) are made to not transmit taste. Finally, if your TT does not have a filter, consider getting one. Some water may have sand another particles as well as bad taste. Walmart sells one in their RV section that I like to use that will last a season that you thread on the hose. I put my pressure regulator on the tap, then the filter, then the hose. On my TT connection, I thread a hose elbow so there is no strain on the hose since the water inlet does not curve down towards where the hose will lay. Thank you very much for you advice. I think I recall as a kid that weird tast of the water that you would get from drinking straight out of the garden hose so I will probably just fill with the fresh water hose as you noted. I like your idea on the filter and does that basically mean that you wouldn't need to have a filter inside the TT since you would have one outside hooked to the source that I assume just threads right onto the hose?? You all made me think of another question that the dealer told me about but I want to make sure I have this right. It is about emptying your tank when you are done camping. He basically said that if you won't need the water on your drive home that you just open all the faucets and the shower in the TT and then also open the two little drain ports underneath the TT. My question is if I just drained my grey tank, wouldn't this just add more water back into it when I would want it empty, hence why I drained it?? Is there a better method to this and what about getting the water out of the outside shower line?

RE: Newbie with fresh water Q's

Carry at least two of the 25 foot white RV water hoses. Often the water valves are not located conveniently. Same for some power boxes. To sanitize fresh water tank. Use only unscented Clorox - 1/2 to 1 cup for a 30 gallon FW tank, pore in Clorox and fill tank. Leave in for 10 minutes and drain. Refill with fresh water and drain again. Tank should be ready for use. We generally only put in around 10 gallons unless we are going remote. Just time how long it takes to fill up a one gallon bottle of water then multiply the time by how many gallons you want to carry. Run the hose for that amount of time.:) Bonefish Great!! Thank you for posting the info on how to go about sanitizing the freshwater tank. I probably wouldn't have even known to do that if it weren't for you guys. :B

RE: Newbie with fresh water Q's

NOTE::: Do not forget to sanitize your freshwater holding tank. It's like a big plastic bottle and you can just imagine what could "grow" in over time. With water weighing about 8lbs per gallon, a 30 gal full tank is an extra 240 lbs to haul down the raod. The best answer is plan ahead and carry only what is necessary. Are there tablets or anything that you can basically toss down in there at the same time you are filling your tank to sanitize?? Or is the only real option to purchase some sort of in-line filtration system that goes inside the TT??

RE: Newbie with fresh water Q's

I might just have to take the advice of waiting unti the CG to fill up but I need to check and make sure they have water there and that my hose would hook up to it. I only wish there was a way to check how much water is actually being filled into your fresh water tank...or is there?

RE: Newbie with fresh water Q's

I try to keep my fresh water tank full all the time... with minimum air on top. I think it stays fresher that way. I always fill it til it starts to run over. At a CG, I leave the water turned on all the time. My MH may be different than yours. I have a valve near the hose hook-up that says Fill the Tank, or Use city Water. Call me if you wish. No, I don't believe my TT has that just the outlet to attach the hose. When you have water at the CG should you still use your fresh water hose to hook up from the CG source to your TT outlet?? Only wondering since that would mean your fresh water hose would be sitting out in the elements the entire time you were there. Forgot to add one more question. When you are filling your TT fresh water tank at home do you have to use the pressure regulator at the spout coming from your home or do you just use it if you are hooked up to water at a CG?

Newbie with fresh water Q's

We are going to be taking our TT out for the first time this coming June and I have a couple questions for you all which I am sure are really basic. My first question is when you are home and are filling up your fresh water tank, do you just fill until it starts to spill out the spout or is there some other point where you want to stop filling? Then my other question is when you are hooked up to a water supply at the CG, do you just constantly have the valve open so the water is constantly flowing into the inlet of your TT and never turn it off? And if you have water at a CG does that mean you don't need to fill up your fresh water tank? Thanks for any help.

RE: Silicone insanity

Funny you bring this up because the other week I went to Wal Mart to get some simple caulk for inside our home around the kitchen sink. Well they had this little hand tool that was made just for removing old caulk. It is over in the section where they carry all the types of caulking and it is a little hand tool that is yellow in color with some black rubber on the handle. Only cost about $2-$3. The head of the tool is a triangle shape that you run along the edge of the window ledge and it is suppose to remove that old junk. **oh, and if this works I bet I would cross your path first...LOL" <<<--------
